A TALE OF TWO COLONIES
Fight for freedom. Fight to survive. For refugees from an overcrowded Terra, dreams of a better life on an alien planet transform into a terrifying battle for survival.
Nothing will stand in the way of Tiger Lily’s dream of escaping the subterranean slums of Terra and visiting the stars. She enters the fierce competition for a place in the scout team on the next spaceship to the remote planet of Delta, where an earlier colony disappeared. Before the ship departs, the arrival of a mysterious message from Delta suggests that the descendants of the first colonists may have survived.
A dangerous mission to seek the lost colony exposes the team to unexpected dangers, and they encounter a grim warrior in the isolated valley. Has Tiger Lily met her match in the tortured man? Where is he leading them? And who are the real rulers of this strange world?
Excerpt from A Tale of Two Colonies
Lily leaned against Conley and relaxed with the boulder supporting her back. She closed her eyes, feeling sleepy in the warm afternoon sun.
Conley shifted slightly. “Lily?” he said softly.
“Yes,” she opened her eyes. He was gazing into her face.
“Thank you,” he said, and kissed her lips.
She slid her arms around his neck and leaned into his embrace. It was peaceful lying in the sun with a faint humming sound in the distance. As they kissed, the sound grew louder.
Suddenly, Conley broke away and leapt to his feet with a warning yell, “Stripers!”
Looking up, Lily discovered the sound came from giant orange striped insects flying above. She struggled erect and pulled out her laser. Conley jumped high to slash with his long sword at the zooming insects, which were attacking in formation. Ranks of huge insects advanced toward their camp. They had two pairs of vibrating wings and bore a stinger on their tails.
Tiger Lily swung into action, firing her laser beam and severing the bulging orange bodies. They kept attacking; swooping down and quickly soaring out of reach. Lily and Conley moved together, standing back to back for protection, while swiping at the heads of the flying monsters.
Lily flipped her wrist com into view, and yelled, “John, watch out for giant wasps!”
Kevin came out of the tent, carrying a black box and sat adjusting the controls. Ming ran to cover him, shooting with a laser in each hand. A high pitched sound pierced their ears briefly as Kevin swept through the spectrum of ultrasound frequencies. There was no reaction from the attacking stripers. Some creatures landed on the ground and crawled toward the humans. Soon, they were attacking from all directions, from the air and the ground.
A minute later, John and Max ran into sight toting the loaded water bags. Max raced over to help Kevin with the controls on the box, while John moved to assist Ming in keeping the stripers away from them. Max jiggered the weapon box, frowning at the readings, and, very soon, he called out, “Cover your eyes.”
A blinding light flashed from the box, and the giant attackers dispersed, regrouping into their formations and flying swiftly to the north.
Conley lowered his sword. He had fought while hopping about with one bare foot. Lily stood by him, recovering her breath as she watched the yellow stripers flying away. She hoped for a longer respite, but Conley spoke urgently, “Move off quickly! Not safe here. Striper hive is nearby. They will attack again soon.”
